Senator Kennedy pens children's book.
I suppose it was inevitable, but Senator Ted Kennedy has finally come out with his official version of what happened that night on July 18, 1969 when he offered to give Mary Jo Kophechne a ride home.
The book, written at a level that small children and new england sheriff's employees can understand, tells a brilliantly-conceived story of a married man off on a joy ride with a very drunken assistant. Suddenly, through absolutely no fault of the man, the car is heaved into several inches of water. The man heroically paces up and down the streambank as he tries to usher on passing cars and tell passersby that nothing whatsoever is going on.
Later, sheriff's deputies add a surprising twist to the story by actually appearing to believe the protagonist and pull the vehicle out of harm's way, later towing it to the hero's house where the carpeting and seats can be dried out, and all available surfaces wiped clean of DNA.
This is a story that should not be forgotten. It's so brave of Senator Kennedy to remind us yet again of the battles he fought to become born into a family of privilege. Hopefully it will be retold every time he makes a public appearance so we all can keep his actions in mind and think of the very least we could do if we were ever in a similar situation.
Bravo, Senator Kennedy!
